Modeling Word Problems: Addition and Subtraction
Time: 3 Hours
Description: This session provides an opportunity to see coherent use of the tape diagram as a model that supports student understanding in grades K-7. Through analysis of various problem types, analysis of student work, and deliberate practice, this session suggests a pedagogy allowing students to make intuitive drawings followed by teachers’ guidance with the tape diagram.
In order to support teachers in grades K-2, analysis and practice of the 12 addition and subtraction word problem situations will be emphasized.
