The overview introduces the core teaching and learning principles that are the research-based foundation for the work we do at the CUNY Adult Literacy and High School Equivalency Program. These principles informed all of the work in this document, from the content selection down to the design of each problem. The overview also discusses the challenges that adult numeracy students face, exploring how students tend to think of themselves in math and emphasizing the importance of re-defining what it means to do math in improving student mindset and perseverance.
