July 2014 NTI: SIFE Curriculum - Introduction

NTI participants

Session materials provide an introduction to SIFE (Students with Interrupted Formal Education) and their characteristics as well as a deep dive into the NYS SIFE curriculum designed to meet the needs of this population.

Through interactive activities in Session 1, educators will identify the characteristics of SIFE, the similarities and differences between SIFE and the larger ELL population, and the unique instructional needs of SIFE in secondary schools.

Through additional activities in Session 2, educators will explore the three stands of the SIFE curriculum. They will examine the purpose of each strand, highlight the standards targeted, and note the texts and methods used in each. The sessions will conclude with educators reflecting on the curriculum design and how the three strands woven together create a unique instructional approach for SIFE in middle and high schools.
